‎ Passage 1‎ Guide for Teenagers The teenage years can be tough, and it’s normal to feel sad every now and then. But if these feelings don’t go away or become so intense that you can’t handle them, you may be suffering from depression. 36 . ‎ Try not to isolate yourself When you’re depressed, you may not feel like seeing anybody or doing anything. Just getting out of bed in the morning can be difficult, but isolating yourself only makes depression worse. 37 Spend time with friends, especially those who are active. ‎ Keep your body healthy Making healthy lifestyle choices can do wonders for your mood. Ever heard of a "runners high"? Physical activity can be as effective as medications for depression, so get involved in sports, ride your bike, or take a dance class. Any activity helps! 38 As for food, make sure you’re feeding your mind with plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. ‎ Avoid alcohol and drugs.‎ You maybe try drinking or use drugs in an effort to escape from your feelings and get a "mood boost," even if just for a short time. However, substance use can not only make depression worse, but can cause you to become more depressed. 39 . You will need special treatment for your substance problem.‎ ‎ 40 .‎ Stress and worry can lead to depression. Talk to a teacher if exams or classes seem overwhelming. In addition, if you have a health concern you feel you can’t talk to your parents about, see a doctor. A health professional can help you approach your parents and guide you toward appropriate treatment. If you’re dealing with relationship, friendship, or family problems, talk to an adult you trust. ‎ A. Ask for help if you are stressed.‎ B. Even a short walk can be beneficial.‎ C. Help is available and you have more power than you think. ‎ Passage 2‎ ‎ 36 The answer is that the government needs money for many things, for example to pay its army, to build public facilities and to buy goods from abroad, and only the people of the country can supply the money. ‎ ‎ 37 That is, a person pays according to the amount of his income. Whether he is a merchant, a doctor, a lawyer, a shopkeeper, a miner, or anything else, he must pay tax if his income is more than a certain amount. This is called a “direct” tax, because it is paid in money direct to the government.‎ ‎ Another tax is paid on goods such as watches, jewelry, tobacco, wine, etc. When they are brought into a country, such a tax is paid as part of the price of these goods if they are later sold in shops. 38 ‎ ‎ People usually complain about having to pay taxes, but they forget that the money is spent on things that they and their families need. We need policemen to catch thieves, and they must be paid what they earn; children need education and there must be schools and teachers; we want our streets to be kept clean, and the wages of men who do this kind of work have to be paid. 39 And we cannot have an army without paying for it.‎ ‎ 40 We have no real cause to complain when we are asked to pay taxes for the good of ourselves and for our fellow citizens. ‎ A. Why must we pay taxes?‎ B. Why do people often complain?‎ C. Taxes, therefore, cannot be avoided.‎ D. Taxes, however, should be cancelled.‎ E. One of the most important taxes is income tax.‎ F. Don’t they have the right to a home? Of course they do. ‎ Some regular travelers take their own belongings: like bed sheets, pillowcases and family photos to make them feel like home no matter where they are; some stay for long periods in the same hotel and as a result become very familiar with service and attendants; 37 . Furthermore, driving a camping car during one’s travels and sleeping in the vehicle at night is just like home -- only mobile! ‎ And how about keeping relationships while in transit? ____38___; some send letters and postcards, or even photos; others may just call and say hi, just to let their friends know that they’re still alive and well. People find ways to keep in touch. Making friends on the way helps travelers feel more or less at home. 39 .‎ Nowadays, fewer people are working in their local towns, so how do they develop a sense of belonging? Whenever we step out of our local boundaries, there is always another “home” waiting to be found. ___ 40____, we can make the place we stay “home”. ‎ A. She goes to work early in the morning and does not return home until late in the afternoon. 37 She treats them with patience and teaches them well. For her excellent quality and very good teaching results, she has been elected as a model teacher several times.‎ ‎ 38 Every day, when she comes back home from work, she sets about doing housework, sweeping the living room and bedrooms or cleaning the furniture, and putting everything in good order. She seems to be busy all the time. As she has been very busy working every day, she looks older than her age. But she looks as cheerful and happy as ever. Mother never buys expensive dresses for herself, but she often buys some inexpensive but high quality clothes for us.39 She just eats a plain meal outside when she is too busy to cook herself. She lives a busy yet simple life, without any complaints.‎ ‎ Often she says to us, “work while you work, and play while you play. That is the way to be happy and gay. If you do not work, you will become lazy and be of no use to society”. What a piece of good advice this is! 40 This advice of hers will always serve as a guide to my behavior. When all of the research has been completed and all of the sentences are structured well, but the paper still lacks some pizzazz(活力),it can be boring to grade. If you are searching for ways to help your students find their voices, why not try making students themselves the topic of the writing? 36 ‎ ‎ Who are you?‎ ‎ One of the most difficult questions for students to answer is “Who are you?” _ 37__ In doing this, through writing, students will start to see their personalities differently and, hopefully, be able to add a feature to their writing.‎ Dear John ‎38 Encourage them to write to a famous person they’ve always admired, and then the one they absolutely hate. Explore how their language changes between the two letters. When students know their audiences, it is much easier for them to add the kind of personality their audience wants to see.‎ ‎39 ‎ When students write about what matters most to them, they will often give you the best writing you’ve ever seen. You’ll get those when you ask questions that hit home. When students have something to say about a given topic, it can be easier for them to get their ideas down and then work on their writing style.‎ Get the words on paper, and then edit them The most valuable lesson students can learn is to write first, and edit later. Have students write for five minutes about their topics. If they can get their ideas down on paper, that’s 90% of the battle. 40 This can help them realize that, once they have the ideas down, the rest is just fine tuning(微调). Once they have this skill mastered, it’s easy for them to start adding their own personal voices to their papers.‎ A.What matters to you?‎ B. What style is taught in class?‎ C. When they write about themselves, students’ voices often shine through.‎ D. Writing letters is a great way for students to explore their writing style.‎ E. Have your students explore who they are and what makes them unique.‎ F. Voice is that magical quality which is able to make a creative writing idea sing!‎ G. Once this want is satisfied, a second level of wants appears: clothing and some sort of shelter. By the end of World War II these wants were satisfied for a great majority of Americans. ____38____It included such items as automobiles and new houses. ‎ By 1957 or 1958 this third level of wants was fairly well satisfied. Then, in the late 1950s a fourth level of wants appeared: the “life-enriching” level. While the other levels involve physical satisfaction-the feeding,‎ ‎ comfort, safety, and transportation of the human body-this level stresses mental needs for recognition, achievement and happiness. It includes a variety of goods and services, many of which could be called “luxury” items. Among them are vacation trips, the best medical care, and entertainment. ____39____ ‎ On this level, a greater percentage of consumer spending goes to services, while on the first three levels more is spent on goods. Will consumers raise their sights to a fifth level of wants as their income increases, or will they continue to demand luxuries and personal services on the fourth level? ‎ ‎ A fifth level probably would involve wants that can be achieved best by community action. Consumers may be spending more on taxes to pay for government action against disease, ignorance, crime and prejudice. ____40____In this way, we can enjoy more fully the good things on the first four levels.‎ ‎ A. Then a third level appeared.‎ ‎ B. Different people have different wants on each level.‎ ‎ C. There are several levels of wants in one’s life.‎ ‎ D.
