But even at the height of my admiration, I couldn’t agree with him that Anne, the main character in Anne of Green Gables, was “the dearest and most lovable child in fiction since the best-known Alice”. I had read Anne of Green Gables as well as Tom Sawyer, and she had made me as sick as a dog. Another Mark Twain’s quote will explain my problem. He said, “When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant (无知的) that I could hardly stand having the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years. ” I gradually understood his words as growing up. When I picked up the book again a few years later, I was too astonished at how much it had improved—and shortly afterwards shocked by the fact that not only could I be a fool in all sporting, artistic and practical matters, I could also be so when it came to reading, too. On rereading, then, I learned that Anne is indeed the dearest and most lovable child. I couldn’t help adoring the girl who insists that her name be spelled with the “e” instead of Ann as she believes that is “so much more distinguished. ” She is a brave and determined survivor of a severe upbringing who has refused to let her circumstances crush her spirit. She arrives at Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert’s farm with everything unfavorable—orphaned, unwanted and her biggest trouble of red-hair and freckled (有雀斑的) face. However, she gets along well, through her strange way of seeing things, through her honest love of beauty and lovable attempts to master her unreasonable desires. She finally wins over the Cuthberts, her neighbors and millions of readers who have met her over the 101 years since the book was first published. When I settle down with it these days, I’ve come to see the truth in Mark Twain’s praise for the book, and this reminds me of the great truth that you are never too young to start rereading. 16. According to Paragraph 1, we can know the writer _______. A. believed Anne to be lovable B. admired Mark Twain because of Anne C. regarded Tom Sawyer as the dearest child D. disagreed with Mark Twain’s opinion on Anne 17. By referring to Mark Twain’s remark on his father, the writer wants to prove that _______. A. people’s attitude may change B. learning can change a person C. the relationships between people can improve D. young people never make correct judgment 18. The reason why the writer admires Anne now is that _______. A. she is an ambitious girl B. she is welcomed by the readers C. she adapts to her environment well D. she changes her name to make it easy to remember 19. The writer’s purpose of writing the passage is to _______. A. recommend Anne of Green Gables B. express admiration towards Mark Twain C. prove that people’s first impression can not be right D. encourage us to reread the books that we may not like at first (B) Studies show that 20 minutes of sleep in the afternoon provides more rest than 20 minutes more sleep in the morning. The body seems to be designed for this, as most people’s bodies naturally become more tired in the afternoon, about 8 hours after we wake up. When you sleep you pass through different stages of sleep, known together as a sleep cycle. These stages include light sleep, deep sleep (which is believed to be the stage in which the body repairs itself), and rapid-eye movement sleep, or REM sleep (during which the mind is repaired). Many experts advise to keep the nap between 15 and 30 minutes, as sleeping longer gets you into deeper stages of sleep, from which it’s more difficult to awaken. Also, longer naps can make it more difficult to fall asleep at night, especially if your sleep deficit (赤字) is relatively small. However, research has shown that a 1-hour nap has more restorative effects than a 30-minute nap, including a much greater improvement in cognitive(认知的)function. The key to taking a longer nap is to get a sense of how long your sleep cycles are, and try to awaken at the end of a sleep cycle. As there are pros and cons to each length of sleep, you may want to let your schedule decide: if you only have 15 minutes to spare, take them! But if you could work in an hour nap, you may do well to complete a whole sleep cycle, even if it means less sleep at night. If you only have 5 minutes to spare, just close your eyes; even a brief rest has the benefit of reducing stress and helping you relax a little, which can give you more energy to complete the tasks of your day. 20. If you get up at 6: 30 am, what is the best time for you to take a nap? A. About 12: 30 pm. B. About 1: 30 pm. C. About 2: 30 pm. D. About 3: 30 pm. 21. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A. How long we should nap should depend on our schedule. B. A longer nap has more advantages than a shorter one. C. Not all the naps can reduce stress. D. We should take a two-hour nap every day. 22. Which is mainly discussed in the last two paragraphs? A. When should we take a nap? B. How long should we nap? C. How many benefits does a nap have? D. What is a sleep cycle? on the contrary相反;above all尤其是,最重要的是;as a result结果,因此;in turn依次,反过来。 5.【解析】选A。 9.【解析】选A。 定语从句that appear in the working world修饰先行词situations。 Look, he is so skilled. He must be an expert in this field. 还原成He is an expert in this field. He might have been very disappointed at the result of the performance yesterday. 还原成He was very disappointed at the result of the performance yesterday. He can’t have been to Beijing. 还原成He hasn’t been to Beijing. 反问句便是:has he? He must have arrived by now. 还原成He has arrived by now. He can’t have slept when you rang him. 还原成He didn’t sleep when you rang him. 反问句便是:did he? 12.【解析】选B。 at your convenience在你方便时。 no doubt毫无疑问,无疑;no sense没道理;no problem没问题;no wonder难怪。 15.【解析】选A。 A选项是马克·吐温的看法而不是作者的看法; B选项认为作者崇拜马克·吐温是因为Anne这个小说人物,通过“Mark Twain was my hero when I was nine because that was when I discovered Tom Sawyer. 17.【解析】选A。通过相关语段“When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant that I could hardly stand having the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years. 故选A。 根据文章第一段“about 8 hours after we wake up”可知人们起床八个小时后会感到疲倦。 21.【解析】选A。 故选A。
