Traditionally, the church and the pub are at the heart of any village or town, where the people gather together to socialize and exchange news. ‎ As a result, British pubs are often old and well preserved. Many of them have become historicists. The most famous example is the pub in the city of Nottingham called “The Old Trip to Jerusalem”, which dates back to the year 1189 AD and is probably the oldest pub in England. ‎ However, British pubs are not just for kings and queens; they welcome people from all classes and parts of society. On a cold night, the pub's landlord or landlady can always find a warm place for you by the fire. There is always honest and hearty food and plenty of drink available at an affordable price.‎ That's how things used to be. Things are beginning to change. It is said that the credit crunch(信贷紧缩 ) is causing 39 British pubs a week to go out of business. People do not have enough spare money to spend on beer. Recently, the UK government banned (禁止) smoking in all pubs, and that may also have affected the number of customers going to pubs.‎ This decline(衰退) is happening despite the fact that in 2005 the UK government started to allow pubs to stay open after 11 p.m. Previously, with 11 p.m. as closing time, customers would have to drink quite quickly, meaning they sometimes got more drunk than they would if allowed to drink slowly. The British habit of drinking a lot very quickly is known as “binge drinking”, and it causes longterm health problems for people and problems with violent crime for communities.‎ In order to save their businesses, pubs are trying to change with the market. British pubs now offer something for everyone. A lot of pubs used to be “Working Men's Clubs”, meaning that women could not usually enter. Today, however, women can freely enter 99% of pubs without experiencing any problems. Perhaps things are changing for the better after all.‎ 文章大意:酒馆和教堂一直是英国最重要的建筑。 ‎ ‎1.The passage mainly tells us something about ________.‎ A.the long history of British pubs B.the decline of British pubs C.the past and present of British pubs D.the importance of British pubs 答案:C 主旨大意题。 ‎ ‎2.Which may not be the cause of the decline of British pubs?‎ A.The credit crunch. B.The present closing time.‎ C.The ban of smoking. D.Having no spare money.‎ 答案:B 细节理解题。 ‎ ‎3.We can infer from the passage that ________.‎ A.binge drinking means drinking less beer B.British people used to like drinking slowly C.closing the pubs early will reduce social problems D.British government aims to discourage people from binge drinking 答案:D 推理判断题。由第五段最后一句话“The British habit of drinking a lot very quickly is known as “binge drinking”, and it causes longterm health problems for people and problems with violent crime for communities.可知,binge drinking造成了人们的长期的健康问题和社区暴力问题;该段一开始讲到政府延长了酒馆的营业时间,这就能有效避免这一问题。可以得出结论:政府的目的是减少binge drinking。‎ ‎4.We can see from the last Paragraph that the author ______.‎ A.holds an optimistic attitude towards the British pubs B.is against the admission of too many women to the pubs C.thinks that women in the pubs will cause less social problems D.thinks that British pubs should offer everything you need 答案:A 推理判断题。由最后一段,特别是最后一句话“Perhaps things are changing for the better after all.”可知,作者对酒馆持乐观态度。‎ Ⅲ.七选五 ‎(2013·洛阳市二模)‎ If you're looking for a challenging situation to practice your English, pick up the phone. These two pictures reflect what's going on in our daily life-Some are wasting while some others are starving.‎ We students living in cities always have enough to eat and many of us are not aware of the significance of cherishing the food we have, leading to tons of rice being wasted every day. But when we regard three meals a day as a routine, just think there are students in poor areas who are strugging for food. Before we abondon the food in our plates, we should remind ourselves of the spreading problem of starvation and malnutrition.‎ Considering the serious problem, I hold the view that it's high time that we raised our awareness by taking steps to improve the situation. Just take meals we are about to consume, and treasure what we have and give a hand to those in need. It's everybody's responsibility to make our earth better. Stop wasting food and we are sure to make a diffrence to the world.‎
