The Mantles, a local family that raises horses, held their last annual horse drive. The extended Mantle family has been in the horse business for more than a century.‎ For the past 11 years, the Mantles have rounded up 300 horses and driven them from their winter range to the 500-acre Mantle Ranch. There, the horses are sold or rented as trail horses for parks and dude ranches(度假牧场). The journey covers 35 miles and takes about three days.‎ The Three Forks community came together each year to see the event. Some even joined in the drive as horse handlers. People from around the country also went to watch this tradition honoring the Old West.‎ ‎“Most people can’t live with their neighbors in the world,” Kail Mantle tells NBC News Montana. “We can’t live without ours.” ‎ In the Old West, or the American frontier in the 1800s, horses were important for transportation and farm work. But in the modern world, the business of raising ‎ horses often costs more money than it earns. That’s why the Mantle family is shutting down its company and selling its ranch.‎ Kail Mantle and his wife, Renee, started their own company, Montana Horses, in 1995 with 14 horses. The Mantles supplied horses to Yellowstone National Park and many ranches in the area.‎ Many of the Mantles’ horses will be sold to their former customers. Kail and Renee now plan to raise cattle and perhaps go on a sailing trip around the world.‎ People in Three Forks will miss the horse drive. They see this last run as the end of an era. Other ranches and horse farms in the area are closing as well. Al Carr, who has joined in the Mantles’ drive for the past 10 years, tells the Reuters News Agency, “The Old West is disappearing right before our eyes.”‎ ‎( )36. The final horse drive refers to the fact that . ‎ A. the Mantles sell their horses for the winter B. the Mantles bring their horses to the market C. the Mantles took part in the horse-riding event D. the Mantles drove their horses to a new place ‎( )37. From what Kail said, we can infer that . ‎ A. his family liked to live with others B. most people couldn’t live with a foreign neighbor C. his family expected a foreign neighbor D. neighbors from different countries can’t live together ‎( )38. Why did the Mantle family give up raising horses?‎ A. Because they had no money to buy new horses.‎ B. Because they couldn’t earn money from it.‎ C. Because they planned to sail around the world.‎ D. Because they would raise cattle instead of horses.‎ ‎( )39. The last paragraph implies that . ‎ A. the Old West is an end of American history B. the final horse drive means the end of a family C. history is just going by quickly D. westerners took horse farms as a symbol of wealth ‎( )40. The main idea of the passage is about . ‎ A. a family ends its business of farms B. the last ranches finally disappeared C. the Old West is coming to an end D. a family holds its last annual horse drive B Summer school is something a kid will never forget. For some, it’s a way to advance past their classmates. For most, summer school is a requirement in order to graduate with their classmates. I can remember being forced into taking a summer school course. It was not the school that forced me into this awkward situation; it was my mother.‎ I was a 16-year-old kid in a new school. My school did not offer summer courses so I had to take my course at an alternative school in the city. It was an experience I will never forget. I was not concerned with making friends. I was there to get credit(学分) for a course that I should have received credit for the previous semester. It was my doing that landed me in the situation and it was important that I understood this.‎ The fees were lowest but the experience was amazing. I enjoyed. I didn’t miss ‎ the day. The course was from Monday to Friday for an entire month. I passed the course with an A. I was thrown into an awkward situation and actually enjoyed it. My friends didn’t even know I took the course. Most of them were still sleeping by the time my course ended each day.‎ Awkward situations are so important for personal growth. This situation made me feel more independent. I made friends. I finally understood what sacrifice and hard work were all about. While attending college, I remembered how much I enjoyed summer school and I chose to take summer school in my first three years of college. Some kids get pushed too much but some don’t get pushed enough. I was never pushed enough.‎ Enable your children to struggle for success. If your child needs summer school you explain to them why it’s important. Some parents are surprised by the situation and may want to be more involved in their children’s education. Follow through and follow up.‎ ‎( )41.
