But what if someone told you that they may also hold the key to fighting cancer (癌症)?u People have been wondering why elephants do not develop cancer, even though they have lifespans (寿命) that are similar to humans, living for around 50 to 70 years. Now scientists believe they know why. A team at the University of Chicago, US has found that elephants carry a large number of genes that stop tumors (肿瘤) from developing. To be precise(exact), they found 20 copies of an anti-tumor gene called TP53 in elephants. Most other species, including humans, only carry one copy. According to the research, which was recently published on the online science network BioRxiv, the extra copies of the gene improved the animal’s sensitivity to DNA damage. This lets the cells quickly kill themselves when damaged before they can go on to form deadly tumors. “An increased risk of developing cancer has stood in the way of the evolution of large body sizes in many animals,” study author Dr. Vincent Lynch told The Guardian. If every living cell (细胞) has the same chance of becoming cancerous, large creatures with long lifespans like whales and elephants should have a greater risk of developing cancer than humans and mice do. But across species, the risk of cancer does not show a connection with body mass. This phenomenon(现象) was found by Oxford University scientist Richard Peto in the 1970s and later named “Peto’s paradox”. Evolutionary (进化的) biologists believe it results from larger animals using protection that many smaller animals do not. In the elephant’s case, the making of TP53 is nature’s way of keeping this species alive. The study also found that when the same genes were brought to life in mice, they had the same cancer resistance (抵抗) as elephants. This means researchers could use the 16 discovery to develop new treatments that can help stop cancers from spreading or even developing in the first place. “Nature has already figured out how to prevent cancer,” said Joshua Schiffman, an oncologist at the School of Medicine, University of Utah, US. “It’s up to us to learn how different animals tackle the problem so we can use those strategies to prevent cancer in people.” 31. Why are elephants unlikely to develop cancer? A. They have a large body size. B. Their genes suffer no DNA damage. C. Certain genes in their body kill existing tumors. D. They carry many genes that keep tumors from developing. 32. According to Dr Vincent Lynch, what has been a risk in the evolution of large animals? A. A risk of deadly tumors. B. Human behavior. C. Extreme weather. D. Cells killing themselves. 33. We can conclude from the last three paragraphs that ______. A. humans are expected to stop cancer in the near future B. depending on nature is not enough to fight against cancer C. this new treatment is more effective than the present ones D. The TP53 genes have proven useful in stopping cancer in mice B September is around the corner, and some of us are already complaining about summer’s end. But parents have a special reason to do so. The end of summer means the start of school. And these days, planning a young child’s schedule is a big challenge. The challenge is no longer finding activities to fill a child’s day; it is saying no to the hundreds of choices available. Our mailbox is filled with brochures advising us to sign our kids up for classes from cooking to martial arts. Educators are themselves discouraged by the number of special classes that many children attend. In the name of “enrichment,” three-year-olds not only go to preschool in the morning but study French or gymnastics after lunch. One teacher tells of a four-year-old asking for help in the toilet before hurrying off to tennis. Another teacher says that children sometimes hold on to her at pickup time. What happened to unstructured time? 16 A generous explanation is that we enjoy giving children opportunities we never had. The truth, however, is that many parents have doubts about how much time they spend away from their families. And one way to reduce this guilt is to believe that time spent in these classes is somehow more beneficial to children than the time we know we should be giving them ourselves. David Elkind, an expert on children, suggests that the 1960s gave birth to the belief that earlier is better. Parents hope that early music lessons, for example, will build a child’s confidence. The truth, however, is that any time children are asked to do too much, too soon, they are at greater risk for feelings of failure. A child’s time does not have to be planned to be meaningful. Remember the lazy days of summer? Some children sleep late and play with the kids across the street until it’s time to come home for dinner. However, with the majority of mothers working, fewer children enjoy that spare time now. Come September, children across the country will finish a full day of kindergarten, only to attend an afterschool program until 6 P.M., when a working mom or dad comes to take them home. That’s too much for a five- year old. Finances, of course, do limit some parents. But let’s be honest with ourselves - our own busy schedules, whatever they involve, are no excuse for burdening a young child’s. 34. The author holds that it’s a challenge to plan a schedule for a child mainly because . A. a child’s schedule is too full B. activities suitable for kids are limited C. parents have too many choices D. children always say no to parents’ advice 35. What the two teachers say in Paragraph 2 implies that . A. children love to stay at school B. they are popular with children C. children dislike after-school classes D. after-school classes are of poor quality 36. According to the author, what is the real reason for parents to send their children to after-school classes? A. Parents want to make up for their own regrets. 16 B. After-school classes develop children’s ability. C. Parents have doubt about their own ability to guide children. D. After-school classes give parents an excuse for being absent. 37. Which of the following will the author probably agree with? A. For children’s benefits, the earlier the better. B. Children’s spare time should be carefully designed. C. Spare time for children is becoming a thing of the past. D. Parents should be forgiven if they have a good reason. C Immigrants (移民)are always being told by politicians to learn the language. But some people want to know how long it takes to speak good English. There are plenty of people in the UK for whom even basic English is a problem. According to a census (人口普查), 726,000 people in England and Wales said they could not speak English well, and another 138,000 said they did not speak it at all. Ling, 40, who arrived five years ago from China, found it difficult to learn English." When I came here, I was pregnant and so I was at home for the next three years. It took me longer to learn as I was very busy with the children." Eventually she was able to begin taking classes and now speaks good conversational(传统的) English. But even with classes, it can be a long process to pick up the language. Age is the most important factor in language acquisition(习得), says Mila Vulchanova, professor of linguistics at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology." There is a sensitive period in language learning, which is biologically determined. So the younger the immigrant, the better. Since this decline is only gradual, teenagers are at an advantage over adults," she says. There are a number of systems for grading English. The government expects immigrants to reach "ESOL Entry 3"or"B1 level", also called "Intermediate 1"in Scotland, before they can be granted(授予)citizenship. It’s equal to being able to hold a confident conversation and, although the government does not have a target figure, it might take 360 hours of study to achieve. George Osborne said in June following the spending review that welfare(福利) 16 claimants who don’t speak English will have their benefits cut if they fail to attend language courses. Huan Japes, deputy chief executive of English UK, a trade body for language colleges, says a rule of thumb is 360 hours, 120 hours for each of three stages, to get to the standard(标准) the government expects benefit claimants to reach. But many of the people who attend courses are visiting students rather than people settling in the UK. Immigrants tend to have different levels of education. "Using 120 hours (for each stage of English fluency) is a rather traditional approach to course book learning," says Dr. Elaine Boyd, head of English language at Trinity College London. "If someone is really highly encouraged, they can learn really quickly. It’s common for children under the age of 11 to be very immersed(浸入) and be fluent in about six months." 38. The example of Ling is given to show that_______. A. it’s difficult to learn English well B. it’s important to speak fluent English C. many immigrants attend English classes D. many immigrants can’t speak English in England 39. What does Mila Vulchanova mainly stress? A. The function of the sensitive period. B. The necessity of working hard at English. C. The advantages children have in learning English. D. The importance of starting learning English early. 40. The author develops the passage mainly by_______. A. offering experts’ views B. providing survey data C. listing the facts of learning English D. giving examples of English learners 41. What can be the best title for the passage? A. Why English is so important for immigrants? B. What can immigrants do to speak good English? C. When is the best time for people to study English? D. How many hours does it take to be fluent in English? 16 D Unless we spend money to spot(认出,发现)and prevent asteroids(小行星)now, one might crash into Earth and destroy life as we know it,say some scientists. Asteroids are bigger versions of the meteoroids(流星体)that race across the night sky. Most orbit the sun far from Earth and don‘t threaten us. But there are also thousands of asteroids whose orbits put them on a collision course with Earth. But $500 million worth of new telescopes right now, then spend $10 million a year for the next 25 years to locate most of the space rocks. By the time we spot a fatal one,the scientists say,we‘ll have a way to change its course. Is it worth it?Two things experts consider when judging any risk are (i)How likely the event is;(2)How bad the consequences if the event occurs. Experts think an asteroid big enough to destroy lots of life might strike Earth once every 500,000 years. Sounds pretty rare but if one did fall. It would be the end of the world. “If we don‘t take care of these bid asteroids, they’ll take care of us,”says one scientist. “it‘s that simple.” The cure, though, might be worse than the disease. Do we really want fleets(舰队,车队)of nuclear weapons sitting around on Earth?“the world has less fear from doomsday(毁灭性)rocks than from a great nuclear fleet set against them.” Said a New York Times article. 42. What does the passage say about asteroids and meteoroids? A. They are heavenly bodies different in composition. B. They are heavenly bodies similar in nature. C. They are more asteroids than meteoroids. D. Asteroids are more mysterious than meteoroids. 43. What do scientists say about the collision of an asteroid with Earth? A. It is very unlikely but the danger exists. B. Such a collision might occur once every 25 years. C. Collisions of smaller asteroids with Earth occur more often than expected. D. It‘s still too early to say whether such a collision might occur. 44. We can conclude from the passage that __ 16 A. While pushing asteroids off course nuclear weapons would destroy the world. B. Asteroids racing across the night sky are likely to hit Earth in the near future. C. The worry about asteroids can be left to future generations since it is unlikely to happen in our lifetime. D. Workable solutions still have to be found to prevent a collision of asteroids with Earth. 45.Which of the following best describes the author‘s tone in this passage? A. Optimistic B. Critical(批评的) C. One hundred years ago in industrial countries, children worked 18 hours a day in a factory at age seven. The factory owner could beat a child who fell asleep or was not fast enough. Both parents and teachers could do the same. Today, there are many laws about children all over the world. Some people think children must obey rules or they should be punished, others do not agree. The Inuits or Eskimos in Alaska almost never punish their children. The parents don’t hit them. If the children go too far,the parents punish them by making fun of them. Children in other parts of the world are not as lucky as Eskimo children. American 16 parents can spank(打……臀部) their children at home, but a teacher cannot hit a child in a public school. This is also true in Germany. In contrast(对比), it is against the law for anyone to hit a child in Sweden. Swedish parents cannot spank their children. The children also have a special government official who works for their rights. There is even a plan for children to divorce from their parents though this is not a law yet! 根据短文内容回答下列各问题。 76. As middle school students we should first study hard and listen to teachers carefully in class. Also we must do everything carefully. And sometimes we may work so hard that we forget to sleep and eat. When we are in trouble, we shouldn't give up. . We should also be honest. If we pick up something on the way, we must return it to the owner at once. And I think it’s necessary for us to be strict with ourselves. 16 But it’s important to forgive others for their mistakes. At the same time we students must obey the school rules and respect our teachers. Also we must be active and get on well with our classmates. In a word, only if we insist on doing everything carefully, we can achieve our goals and realize our dreams. And if we put our effort into studying, we can help make our country stronger and stronger. 16查看更多
