They are stories about fairies, princes, princesses, witches, giants, mermaids and other fantasy characters. Fairy tales What is your favourite fairy tale? Hans Christian Andersen Do you remember the stories “The emperor’s new clothes” and “The ugly duckling”? Andersen wrote the stories. He was a Danish writer. He wrote a lot of interesting fairy tales and stories. Children around the world enjoy reading his stories. Hans Christian Andersen was a Danish author. Andersen's childhood home in Odense He was born in the town of Odense, Denmark, on 2nd April, 1805. He was an only child. More about Andersen Andersen is best remembered for his fairy tales. More about Andersen What else? Andersen’s Fairy Tales His first book of fairy tales was published in 1835. In his lifetime, he wrote more than one hundred and fifty fairy tales, and his stories have been translated into over 100 languages. More about Andersen Life itself is the most wonderful fairy tale. Hans Christian Andersen The stories “Snow White”, “Little Red Riding Hood” and “Cinderella” are from Grimms’ Fairy Tales. The Grimm brothers were German writers. They collected a lot of stories. Both adults and children like their stories. The Grimm brothers Jacob was born in 1785 and Wilhelm was born in 1786. More about the Grimm brothers The Grimm brothers were story collectors. They gathered and wrote many stories. The stories “Snow White”, “The Frog Prince” and “Sleeping Beauty” are from Grimms’ Fairy Tales. Grimms’ Fairy Tales Read and learn Aesop’s Fables Fables are short stories with moral lessons. Many fables use animals that act and talk just like people as characters. Fables Aesop was a Greek storyteller. He was once a slave. He later became free because of his knowledge and intelligence. More about Aesop Aesop’s Fables is another great book. Most stories in this book are about animals. The animals in the stories can talk. Some well-known stories are “The fox and the grapes”, “The farmer and the snake” and “The wind and the sun”.
