But fireworks go back many years before the first American Independence Day celebration, which took place in 1777, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The earliest fireworks can be traced(追溯) to around 2,000 years ago in China. People then are said to have roasted bamboo stalks. The stalks turned black and sizzled. The air inside the hollow 2 stalks would explode(爆炸). Baozhu is a Mandarin Chinese word for firecracker. It means “exploding bamboo”. Years later, Chinese chemists took fireworks a step further. This happened sometime between 600 and 900 A.D. People filled bamboo shoots with gunpowder. They threw them into a fire pit. Steel dust or iron shavings were added to make them sparkle. In China, these firecrackers were often used in celebrations. In the 13th century, fireworks spread to Europe. In the centuries that followed, Europeans began moving to North America. So it was no surprise that when July 4th began to be celebrated as America's Independence Day, fireworks were part of the plan. John Adams was one of America's Founding Fathers. He said he hoped the anniversary of the country's independence would be marked for years to come by “bonfires”. The first July 4th celebration happened during the middle of the Revolutionary War. Cannons were fired. Fireworks, too, marked the occasion. Today, fireworks are an established July 4 tradition. Will you see a fireworks display this Independence Day? It is the day when children, young and old, try to show how much they appreciate(感激) their mothers, or those who have served as mother figures in their lives. England was one of the first countries to set aside(留出) a day to recognize mothers. In the eighteenth century when many people worked as servants for the rich, “Mothering Sunday” was a day for them to return home to be with their mothers. Though this custom changed after the Industrial Revolution, mothers in England are still honored with a special day in March. In the United States, the idea of Mother's Day was first introduced in 1872 by Julia Ward Howe, a famous writer and social reformer of the time. However, the establish men of an official day to honor mothers was because of the love of one daughter, Anna Jarvis. As a girl, Anna helped her mother take care of her garden, filled mostly with white carnations, her mother's favorite flower. When Mrs. Jarvis died on May 5, 1905, Anna decided to honor her. Anna Jarvis began writing to members of congress, asking them to set aside a day to honor mothers. In 1910, the governor of West Virginia decided the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day. A year later, every state was celebrating it, and in 1914 President Woodrow Wilson declared(宣布) the first national Mother's Day. On Mother's Day morning, some American children follow the tradition of serving their mothers breakfast in bed. Other children will give their mothers gifts that they have made themselves or bought in stores. Someone who is born today can expect to live 25 years longer than someone who was born in the 19th century. It's even thought that in the future more and more people will celebrate their hundredth birthday. Here are five rules for a healthy life. 1. Sure, it's comfortable to sit on the sofa and watch TV. But experts say you should get off the sofa. To keep fit, you have to walk at least 10,000 steps every day. In the past, people's jobs required more physical effort. When farmers were working in the fields, they were keeping fit at the same time. Think about it: do you get the same amount of exercise today as they did in the past? 2. It's important to eat food that is fresh and natural, for example, fruit and vegetables. Fast food is not healthy. You should only have it once in a while. Eating too much of the wrong food will harm your health. The bad diet means you'll put on weight, one of the fastest ways to an unhealthy life. 3. When we were babies, we slept for much of the day. Teenagers don't need as much sleep as babies, but it's important for you to get about eight hours' sleep. At weekends, you've got more time, so 5 use it not just for your friends, but for rest, too. 4. Many people believe that happiness is important for our general health. Sometimes it is not easy to be a teenager because of the difficulties of school, exams or friendships. If you are worried about something, talk to your parents or teachers. 5. Yes, you knew I was going to say this! But it's so important. Smoking is not cool. It's dangerous. It harms nearly every part of your body. Think about how your family and friends will feel, and think about what it will do to your health. A.Be happy. B.Say “no” to smoking. C.Be careful. D.Have a rest. E.Watch your diet.
