Everyone has a strong opinion (观点), and 28 at the same time. Being born in a family like mine has made me more curious (好奇的) and interested in the world around me, and I like to 29 . anything that anyone tells me. But it has also made me notice that I am not a very good listener. And when I say "listening", I don't mean "nodding your head and politely saying Uh huh or Ooh I see". I mean the kind of 30 where you find yourself deeply understanding the person you're speaking with. When you are interested in their story, your world becomes less about you and more about them. No, I was never very good at that. I spent the 31 of 2010 living in South Africa. On weekdays, I worked to help children with AIDS; on weekends, I went sightseeing, from Durban to Cape Town to Victoria Falls. But if you asked me what I really 32 in South Africa, I would tell you one thing: I listened. I listened to a Nigerian taxi driver's memories (回忆) of his fifth birthday; I listened to a German talk about the beaches of Brazil; I listened to a 20-year-old co-worker tell about his weekend; I listened to a South African tour guide's talk about the start of her travel company. I listened, and I listened. And sometimes I spoke ... but mostly I listened. And if I had not spent two months listening, I might have missed the moment a little girl, who lost parents at three, whispered (低语) after a long silence, "I love you." I might have missed that, if I had not learned to listen. Before that summer, I only knew how to 33 . I could sit down with anyone and hear their stories and nod and answer at the right times-but most of the time I was looking at the next words out of my own mouth. After my summer in South Africa, I know when my mouth is closed and my mind (思想) is 34 , I can learn the most about other people, and perhaps about myself. A person should know when to close her mouth, sit back, and focus on (关注) someone else. I 35 in listening. 28. A. eats B. talks C. laughs D. answers 29. A. see B. get C. remember D. question 30. I started playing the piano when I was five years old and still really enjoy it now: it's a great way to relax and cheer me up when I'm feeling down. When I lived at home with my parents, we had a lovely brown piano in the house. I learned to play the piano for five years and I had piano lessons every week. When I went to university, I had to leave my piano behind. But I wanted to play the piano so much. I spent all the money I had on a new e-piano. It was quite difficult to get it from the music shop to my house: I had to take a friend with me to get it into a taxi and then carry it to the door. I was very glad I bought it though. I was able to play whenever I wanted. When I was studying or writing a paper, I used to take a break to play something. It really helped me become happy again! When I was feeling a bit homesick, playing music that I learned on my old piano made me feel better. Now I am on my year abroad (在国外). Unluckily, I don't have a piano any more. I wish that pianos were as easy to move as guitars because I really miss (思念) spending time on my hobby. When I go home for Christmas, I will drive my family mad (疯狂的) because I will play the piano all the time. It probably won't sound very nice because I haven't had any practice! 39. At the age of five. B. When he lived with parents. C. On his year abroad. D. When he was at university. 41. What does the writer want to tell us? A. It's boring to play the piano. B. It's difficult to get a piano. C. It's great to play an instrument. D. It's important to play the piano every day. 9 C Ten years ago, many people thought that the age of the physical books was coming to an end. The books have been our companions (陪伴) for hundreds of years, but they thought they were surely about to die out. Soon, we would all be reading on little screens and forgetting about the places called "libraries" and "bookshops". But it seems that the ideas of the death of the book are much too exaggerated (夸张). At least in the UK, as a newspaper found, sales of e-books are going down but sales of physical books are rising. More surprisingly, it's young people who are buying the most physical books. More than 60% of 16-to-24-year-olds like print books better than e-books. The most popular reason that they give is: "I like to hold the product." Physical books become very personal to lovers of reading. It often starts with the way they get them. Many buyers of books like to write their name on the first page when they just buy one. And we carry books around with us everywhere. If the book gets a dog-ear or there's a stain (污点) on the pages from coffee or food, all these make the book-our book-even more personal. It's as if readers of physical books make friends with them. Of course, some could say that the modern stuff (现代化的物品) on which people read e-books, like Kindles and iPads, are also things that we really enjoy. But it isn't quite the same. A Kindle can hold as many pieces of writing as a whole library. But a story we remember turning its pages in our favorite armchair enters our memory forever. Physical books are as precious (珍贵的) to some readers as their favourite presents or photos of family members. This "friendship" people build with books isn't just sentimental (情感的). A study shows that readers remember more information from physical books than from e-books. However, I'm sure that e-books are here to stay. They aren't simply " here today, gone tomorrow". But it's also sure that physical books, which are over six hundred years old, are here to stay, too. 42. What did many people think about books 10 years ago? A. E-books would die out finally. B. Only e-books would be in libraries. C. Physical books would stay with us. D. Physical books would come to an end. 43. What do the words "physical books" in Paragraph 2 probably mean? A. Physics books. B. Paper hooks. C. E-books. D. PE books. 44. According to the passage, people like physical books because ________. A. they are very easy to carry and to read B. they like the coffee stains on the pages C. they are more personal and are like friends D. they are always very cheap and easy to get 9 45. What's the writer's attitude towards (对……的态度) physical books? A. He's hopeful about their future. B. He is happy about their death. C. He doesn't care about them. D. He doesn't really like them. 八、阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。(共6分,每小题2分) Over the last few years, I have found that one of my favourite things to do in my free time is volunteering (做志愿活动). I often volunteered for many different volunteering groups. Last year, I took dogs for walks at an animal centre. This year, I run activities for children at an after-school club at weekends. No matter what kind of volunteering, I have always loved it and I would tell others to give it a go. Here is my top three reasons (理由) why I think volunteering is so meaningful. 1. It helps you to get experience and skills (经验与技能). By volunteering, you are carrying out a job-though you can't get money-so you can get lots of experience and skills which would be useful in the future. For example, many volunteering jobs will help you to get experience in working as a team. 2. You can meet new people. One of the best things about volunteering is meeting the other volunteers ! Some of them are very interesting people and might just turn out to be great friends too. 3. It's a way to get confidence (信心). Many volunteers say that it helps them to feel more confident, in all kinds of ways. For example, I'm always quite a shy person, but my volunteering experience helps me to get confidence in talking to people I don't know and even in front of lots of people! These are just a few of the many reasons why I suggest (建议) that you look for ways to volunteer in your town or city. Remember that any kind of volunteering is good volunteering. If you like, you can start with something small and who knows what it will lead to! The most important thing to remember is that as well as helping others, you can get a lot too! 9 46. Is volunteering one of the writer's favourite things? 47. What did the writer do last year as a volunteer? 48. Why is volunteering so meaningful? 书面表达(共22分) 九、根据句意和音标填写单词。(共4分,每小题1分) 49.
