When the doctor told him that both his legs were broken, he knew his college basketball dreams were over. Tony did what the doctors told him, but it didn't work. After he left the hospital, Tony was sent to a health center. A week after he arrived there, he met Sunny Chen. Sunny used to be a coach. His legs were hurt badly in a skating accident. Though he couldn't move his legs, Sunny became a coach of a basketball team called the Suns. It was an on-wheelchair basketball team, because everybody on the team played from a wheelchair. Sunny invited Tony to join the game. Tony played badly, but for the first time since the accident, he stopped feeling sorry for himself. After becoming a part of the Suns, Tony improved quickly. Basketball was like medicine for him. Tony was much better than before. When Tony became sad or angry, Sunny was there to be with him. The day before Tony left the center, he had dinner with Sunny. He asked Sunny how he could be so happy, even with his broken legs. Sunny smiled and said, “It’s really quite easy. When you keep your face to the sun, the shadows fall behind.” 52. According the passage, we can know that Sunny was ________. A. shy and careful B. humorous and patient C. helpful and hopeful D. serious and hardworking C Americans use many expressions with the word dog. People in the United States love their dogs and treat them well. They take their dogs for walks, let them play outside and give them good food and medical care. However, homeless dogs lead a different kind of life. The expression “to lead a dog’s life” describes a person who has an unhappy life. Some people say we live in a dog-eat-dog world. That means many people are competing for the same things, like good jobs. They say that to be successful, a person has to work like a dog. This means they have to work very, very hard. Such hard work can make people dog-tired. Still, people say every dog has its day. This means that every person becomes successful at a particular time of his or her life. To be successful, people often have to learn new skills. Yet, some people say that you can never teach an old dog new skills. They believe that older people do not like to learn new things. Husbands and wives use this doghouse term when they are angry at each other. For example, a woman might get angry at her husband for coming home late or forgetting their wedding anniversary (结婚纪念日). She might tell him that he is in the doghouse. She may not treat him nicely until he says sorry. Dog expressions also are used to describe the weather. The dog days of summer are the hottest days of the year. A rainstorm may cool the weather. But we do not want it to rain too hard. We do not want it to rain cats and dogs. 56. What is this passage mainly about? A. How to take care of dogs. B The reasons why Americans love dogs. C. Expressions with the word dog. D. A dog-eat-dog world. 57. What’s the meaning of “Every dog has its day” according to this passage? A. Every dog has its own life. B. Every dog wants to be successful one day. C. Older people do not like to learn new things. D. Everyone can get success in some period during lifetime. 58. By saying___________, we mean a woman gets angry with her husband. A. “ He is in the doghouse” B. “He leads a dog’s life” C. “He lives in a dog-eat-dog world” D. “Every dog has its day” 59. It has been really hot these days, as________. A. it rains cats and dogs B. we’re leading a dog's life C. we are having the dog days of summer D. we’re in the dog’s house D When I was about 10, there were lots of us bored, bookish children in the 1970s. Television was largely rubbish, and our parents’ bookshelves were what was left. I thought of this when I heard author Claire Tomalin complain that children are growing up without the skills to read classic works of English literature, such as Charles Dickens and that they are not being taught to have the lengthy attention spans (时段) necessary for his texts. She blames this attention shortfall on the terrible television programmes. It is true that children have never had more entertainment (娱乐) to choose from than today. And it is probably true that this generation’s attention span is shorter; my children have dismissed as “too slow” or “boring” most of the childhood books I saved for them. I was quite upset about this until I reread some. It is not just entertainment that moves at a faster rate. The world does, too. And, frankly, Dickens is dense, and hard work, as are many writers of that period. Another fact is that not many children of my generation read Dickens for pleasure either. It took me years to come to Great Expectations and The Pickwick Papers, and then it was only post-university when I became independently hungry for knowledge. Dickens might be one of the greatest creators of characters in English, as Tomalin says, but today’s children see Greg Heffley’s nature in The Wimpy Kid of Jeff Kinney’s novels. And they are so interested in the resourceful Baudelaire children in Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events. They can recognize the adolescent difficult situation of Harry Potter. You can’t insist that childhood tastes not change for a long time. My mother encouraged me to read anything on the basis that all reading was valuable, and would act as a gateway to more challenging works later on. In turn, I believe that my children will come to the classics when they’re ready. Until then, I’ll take comfort from the fact that the 1969 classic The Very Hungry Caterpillar is still the most-read children’s book in Britain. It has underdeveloped characterization, yes, and the vocabulary is limited. But as a starter to give children an appetite (食欲) for reading, it is priceless. 60. What is important for children reading Dickens according to Claire Tomalin? A. Vocabulary. B. Patience. C. Knowledge. D. Taste. 61. Which of the following would the author agree with about Dickens? A. They are difficult to understand. B. Their vocabulary is old and limited. C. They are the entrance to other literature works. D. Their characters are better created than today’s works. 62. The author thinks it ________ that children nowadays don’t like Dickens. A. understandable B. worrying C. disappointing D. interesting 63. What’s the topic of the passage? A. Attention span. B. Classic works. C. Reading skills. D. Children’s reading. 七、阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。(共10分,每小题2分) Music and Behavior Where did you go yesterday? Did you hear music at any of those places? Today most stores and restaurants play music. You might even hear music in an office or on a farm. Scientists believe that music changes the way people behave. According to some scientists, the sound of western classical (古典的) music makes people feel richer. When a restaurant plays classical music, people spend more money on food and drinks. When the restaurant plays modern music, people spend less money. Without background music, people spend even less. Scientists also believe that loud, fast music makes people eat faster. In fact, people chew (咀嚼) their food faster when the music gets faster. Some restaurants play fast music during busy hours. This gets people to eat faster and leave more quickly. In this way, restaurants can make more money. Some scientists think that music makes students think and learn better. They say that music helps students to be more active. It is true that students learn better when they are relaxed and listening to music can help them relax. The next time you hear music somewhere, be careful. It might change the way you behave. 64. It is a great way to show your feelings and open up your heart when you're sad or when you just need someone to share your feelings. Many of us started writing a diary but stopped somehow. We started during a difficult time and then gave up writing when things got better. It doesn't have to be that way. Writing a diary can also help record happy memories. 三、听对话,请根据所听到的对话内容和提示词语,将所缺的关键信息填写在答题卡的相应位置上。 对话你将听两遍。(共10分,每小题2分) W: Hi! Can I help you? M: My daughter is fifteen and my son is seven. W: Right. Well, there are a lot you can do once you've crossed the lake. One thing that's very popular is a visit to the Green Farm. W: Well, there's also a 40-minute ride round the farm on a horse, if he wants. M: Do you think he can ride it? He hasn't done that before. W: Sure. It's safe for children. And again, visitors are welcome to do some farming on their own, like picking strawberries, going fishing, milking a cow and so on. You could easily spend an hour or two there. M: OK.
